The Summer Learning Journey

Day 2 – Learning the basics
Now that you have chosen your country, it is time to decide where, within your country, you would like to visit. Many tourists will choose to visit the capital city of a country. It is often quite large and full of interesting things to see and do.
Activity 1
Before you go overseas it will be important that you learn a bit about the capital city of your country. Hop online and find out about the capital city of your country. Use this information to complete the five sentences below:
  1. The name of the capital city is Canberra
  2. The population of the capital city is 381,488
  3. In January, the weather in the capital city is usually sunny
  4. The capital city is located in the northern (northern, southern, middle) part of the country.
  5. The languages most commonly spoken in the capital city are ___________________________english or with an accent____________________________
Activity 2
One of the most popular activities in Madrid, the capital city of Spain, is called ‘Bullfighting.’ It has been a part of Spanish culture for centuries. In bullfighting people called ‘toreros and ‘matadors’ fight with a live bull. The toreros do most of the fighting and, ultimately, capture the bull and tie it up. Once it has been caught, the matador joins the fight and kills the bull. Although most toreros and matadors are men, there are some women who also compete in the sport.

Not everyone supports bullfighting in Spain. In fact, about 30% of the population want it to be banned (stopped) completely. What do you think? On your blog tell us whether or not you think that bullfighting should be banned in Spain. Please provide, at least, two reasons to support your decision.

I think that bull fighting should be stopped
I think it should be stopped because it is killing the population of bulls all around
I think it should be banned because whats the point of killing bulls and being proud i would feel guilty if you do this for sport you must not have a heart

Bonus activity
Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. Have you been to Wellington? If so, please tell us about two things that you did when you were in Wellington.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to go to Wellington, follow the link to learn more about this very cool city: Discover Wellington.
On your blog, tell us what two things you would like to do if you had the chance to visit Wellington. Would you go to the botanical gardens or visit the Beehive? Perhaps you would prefer to go shopping on Cuba Street or go out for dinner on Quay Street…
I quickly travelled to wellington after my Koro had a heart attack. His heart stopped for 13 minutes. I hadn't seen my grandparents since they had moved to wellington about halfway through the year.

  1. Morena Cameo,
My name is Tania and I am a Manaiakalani Outreach Facilitator - I work in lots of different schools with teachers and learners who, like you, are using chromebooks for their learning and blogs to share their learning. I have been emailing with Rachel and she has told me all about The Summer Learning Journey, it's great to see you have made a start. Are you planning on traveling to both Australia and Spain? That would be a great trip and you would learn so much along the way as they are both very different countries. I was lucky enough to go to Spain this year and we went and visited a Bull Fighting Ring (but not when there was a fight on!). I agree with you, I think bull fighting should be banned, in fact it has been banned in some parts of Spain eg Barcelona. It must have been very scary for you visiting Wellington when your Koro had a heart attack. I hope all is well now. Keep up the great researching, reading, writing, creating and sharing. Enjoy your summer holiday.

  2. Kia ora Cameo!

I'm Mark and I'm a teacher working for the Summer Learning Programme! It is great to see that you've made a start on one of the days! Welcome!

Your facts are very clear so well done! And you answer to the bull fighting question is fantastic, especially the last part. I think bull fighting is risky, but also unfair on the bull who almost always ends up dead, so it isn't really a contest of bravery - it is more like a trick to prove that they are strong.

I am sorry to hear your Koro had a heart attack. I hope you were okay. It is a hard thing to deal with when you are so young.

That being said, I am so happy you have joined us on our Summer Learning Journey! It looks like you are a great writer, so I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work!

I hope you have a great holiday! Kia Kaha!

    Mark

  5. Hi Cameo

This is a great post. Well done for participating in the Summer Learning Journey. I agree that bull fighting should be banned because its a form of animal cruelty. Very sad to hear about your Koro. Hopefully you will have time to add more posts before school starts.

  6. Hi Cameo,
It's so good to see you blogging over your holidays!! I find bull fighting very frightening but for those that live in Spain, I'm sure must find this very exciting. Thank you for your lovely card you wrote. I will try and come and visit when I can and pop in to your blog from time to time. Have a great year and do your best. Say hello to your mum and give your little brother a hug from me too.

  7. Hi there Cameo,

I'm Von a year 7 student from St Pius X School. Nice job for completing the 3 tasks. Amazing facts and I have to agree with Miss Lavakula, Bullfighting may be frightening to watch but for the people living in Spain.. I do sure think that it's exciting for them to watch bullfighting and besides it's a tradition thing that the country of Spain do.

Nice blogging and keep it up :)
