The Summer Learning Journey

Day 2 – Learning the basics
Now that you have chosen your country, it is time to decide where, within your country, you would like to visit. Many tourists will choose to visit the capital city of a country. It is often quite large and full of interesting things to see and do.
Activity 1
Before you go overseas it will be important that you learn a bit about the capital city of your country. Hop online and find out about the capital city of your country. Use this information to complete the five sentences below:
  1. The name of the capital city is Canberra
  2. The population of the capital city is 381,488
  3. In January, the weather in the capital city is usually sunny
  4. The capital city is located in the northern (northern, southern, middle) part of the country.
  5. The languages most commonly spoken in the capital city are ___________________________english or with an accent____________________________
Activity 2
One of the most popular activities in Madrid, the capital city of Spain, is called ‘Bullfighting.’ It has been a part of Spanish culture for centuries. In bullfighting people called ‘toreros and ‘matadors’ fight with a live bull. The toreros do most of the fighting and, ultimately, capture the bull and tie it up. Once it has been caught, the matador joins the fight and kills the bull. Although most toreros and matadors are men, there are some women who also compete in the sport.

Not everyone supports bullfighting in Spain. In fact, about 30% of the population want it to be banned (stopped) completely. What do you think? On your blog tell us whether or not you think that bullfighting should be banned in Spain. Please provide, at least, two reasons to support your decision.

I think that bull fighting should be stopped
I think it should be stopped because it is killing the population of bulls all around
I think it should be banned because whats the point of killing bulls and being proud i would feel guilty if you do this for sport you must not have a heart

Bonus activity
Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. Have you been to Wellington? If so, please tell us about two things that you did when you were in Wellington.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to go to Wellington, follow the link to learn more about this very cool city: Discover Wellington.
On your blog, tell us what two things you would like to do if you had the chance to visit Wellington. Would you go to the botanical gardens or visit the Beehive? Perhaps you would prefer to go shopping on Cuba Street or go out for dinner on Quay Street…
I quickly travelled to wellington after my Koro had a heart attack. His heart stopped for 13 minutes. I hadn't seen my grandparents since they had moved to wellington about halfway through the year.

2016 Reflection of the year

This year has been one of the very best. Particularly this year was my favourite at Pt England School ever! The sports I have participated in this year are: Basketball, Netball, Soccer, Cricket and Touch. I really enjoyed all of these sports teams as everyone was friendly.

The things I participated in this year was: Sports teams, Kapa haka, Extension, The Winter Learning Journey, Apprentice Of The Year Supporting Team, Sports Tournaments, Youthtown, Tech, Al7, Nesian Fusion, Fiafia, Mihimihi, Karakia Whakamutunga, Cross Country, Athletics, School picnic and the School Olympics.

I have really enjoyed this year as I have had nameless amounts of opportunities and chances that I tried my best to take. I’d like to thank all the teachers in team 5 at Pt England. They helped me get all the prizes I could have ever imagined.

Prizegiving Reflection 2K16

This is my prize giving reflection of 2016

On Thursday the 8th of December Pt England School had the school Prize giving. At five o'clock the senior Kapa haka group Manaia Ki Te Rangi met in the Whare Whono. We all got dressed up then it all happened…

At precisely 7:00 pm we travelled from the library to the stage at it had finally started. Prize giving 2016 was the best I have had so far personally especially when you get 3 certificates and three trophy's. The time came when the Year 7’s did their item and it got alot of cheers plus it was extremely fun.

During the end tears ran down my face as the year 8s were finishing off their item. Lastly we sang the school song ‘Strive To Succeed’ and it was a blast!
I can’t wait for next year because my hopes are that it will be even better.

School Picnic 2K16

This is my school picnic writing about last Friday.

Last Friday we had our annual school picnic on a hot summer day. With chocolate brownies, hot chips, Cheesecake and fizzy drinks it proves Room 3 was The best fed class by far. Finally we had a sunny day worthy enough for us to go.

From the start a group of us went to a picnic and we started to take videos and photo’s of us. It was an awesome day filled with fun and excitement. Later on I got buried neck deep in sand then I washed the sand off as I went for a refreshing swim with my friends.I can’t wait till next year for our school picnic because it will be even better.

The Scientific Method

Walt: write a piece of instructional writing using the 'Scientific Method'

Purpose/Question:
Our question was: Which one will react the best with the mentos?

Research:
Due to research diet coke would have the biggest chemical reaction.

Hypothesis/Prediction:
Our prediction was that diet coke will go the highest.

Experiment:
  1. 1.5 litre bottles of the following:
    1. 7up, coke, diet coke, fanta, l&p and pepsi and also some mint mentos to drop in. we placed all six bottles onto a table then one by one we dropped h mentos into the bottle and filmed what happened.

Analysis/Results:
the best reacting drink was 7Up and it was the first to be tested.

Conclusion:

we would have done it differently by keeping all of the fizzy in and not taking any out.

Experiment Gone Wrong!!!

Walt: Revisit 'Narrative Writing' Using scientific knowledge of experiments.
This task was a challenge for me at first, but towards the end it got easier. I really liked this task and it was fun. I can't wait for more to come!

Rust

Fast Rust Task
Rust

What 3 ingredients are needed for rust to occur.
Oxygen
Water
Metal (Iron)

Write a brief paragraph explaining the rusting process (why rusting occurs)
First when the metal (particularly iron) is exposed to the air and/or water for a long time, When metal is near water and oxygen, it forms rust. Rusting occurs when H2O (water) and O (oxygen) is in contact with iron or steel. The rusting process becomes faster when salty water or acid rain is applied.

How could you prevent something from rusting?
By preventing metal from rusting you can paint it or put a layer of oil or grease over the metal. It is a good idea to use this as a solution so that the oxygen could bounce off the metal instead of rusting it, depending on what kind of environment  the metal is in.

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you’ve learned from this reading.
We learnt that the term corrosion is used to describe metal breaking down when it is exposed to the environment. We also learnt that rusting can be prevented when you either paint, grease/oil or a process called galvanizing. An example of galvanizing is when you put zinc and iron together, the zinc protects the iron but it sacrifices itself because zinc reacts more than the iron.

Science investigation - Fair Testing

Fill out the following table to help you explain the Growing in the dark: Plants and light experiment.

Aim - what are you trying to find out?
We are trying to find out if plants need light to grow.
Hypothesis - what do you think your results will be?
I think the plants do need light to grow and stay alive.
Independent Variable - what variable will you change?
The amount of light the plant has/gets.
Dependent Variable - what variable will you measure?
How much soil would be in the pot covering the seedling.
Controlled Variable - what variables will you keep the same?
The amount of water added to it.

The students of Room 4 wanted to find out what colour of bird feeders birds preferred. FIll our the table below thinking of which variables you would make independent, dependent and controlled.

Aim - what are you trying to find out?
What colour do birds prefer on their bird feeders.
Hypothesis - what do you think your results will be?
I think the birds will be used to the color brown.
Independent Variable - what variable will you change?
Different colours on the bird feeders.
Dependent Variable - what variable will you measure?
The amount of birds.
Controlled Variable - what variables will you keep the same?
The amount of food the birds get.

Statistics

Walt: analyse patterns in data

In this task I found data and I analysed it. There were patterns in my group survey and the only person not included as much was Vaivasa, one pattern was that 4 out of 5 people took mins or less to get to school. I really enjoyed this activity/task!

Coloured version:

“ Time to go Jess!” her mum yelled “Coming!” Jess said as she sprinted to the car in excitement. Jess had packed her favourite snacks, Watermelon, cookies, pineapple and a water bottle. They arrived at Mt Wellington. She and her family hopped out of  the car and started strolling happily.

Once everyone had made it to the top they sat down to have a snack… Thomas ( Jess’s little brother ) went to play for a while and found a tree facing the horizon so he sat down. “Jess! Come look at this” he screamed with no reply. Thomas soon realised his voice was muted and his word were only in his head.

Thomas tried to leave and find his family but he couldn’t move either. Struggling to move he screamed at the top of his lungs and it came out as a small yell, luckily Jess caught his voice and followed it to him. Thomas seemed paralyzed for moments till she broke him free from what seemed a curse.

Jess and Thomas went back the next day after Jess was informed of the situation. “Are you sure it was around here?” Jess asked. “ 100% positive sis” Thomas replied. Minutes later they found the tree “ Don’t go too close to it!” Thomas whispered “Or else it will happen to you next!” “ I hope not…” she whimpered. Let get this sucker. “Who are you!?” Jess screamed. “It’s none of your business children, now away with you I have things to do…” “ Not a chance” Thomas exclaimed. “ If  I stop will you?” the tree said “ what did we do!?” Jess questioned “ People always sit on me and try to cut me down, so if I stop will you?” “We had no idea… deal then and we also apologise on behalf of everyone” “Yes me too…” “Let’s go home now Thomas” Jess said happily once again.

For years Thomas and Jess had been bringing things to help the tree out.
The tree had always been kind and happy since the day the two children apologised and everything was forever well.

Chromatography Experiments

In this experiment Brooklyn and I prepared a 1/4 cup of water. Secondly we made a sample using filter paper. The third thing we did was we set up the filter paper in the cup of water making sure it was just touching the paper. Lastly we sketched a before and after sadly we forgot the before but this picture is after.

Solid truth about 'Matter'

Walt: synthesise information from multiple sources.

Give three examples of each state of matter;
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Ice
Water
Steam
Dirt
Golden Syrup
Helium
Coins
Juice
Flatulence

What’s the difference between the three states of matter?
Solids
Liquids
Gases
Solids hold place because the molecules are very tight and you need to put alot of pressure to break solids.Image result for particles in a solid
Liquids have different structures and they move easily unlike solids.

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you learned from this reading.

I learnt that there are not only three different states of matter but there are five such as: BEC, Solids, Plasma's, Liquids and Gases. I also found that the scientists who worked with the Bose-Einstein condensate received a Nobel Prize for their work in 1995. Also I spotted that Hydrogen is a colourless, odourless, tasteless, non-toxic, nonmetallic, highly combustible diatomic gas with molecular formula H2.
