Science Reflection
WALT: share my learning in our yr 10 sci class
It's only been a week and a half and we have already learned about a lot in science so far. Alvina (An ex-tamaki student) came and talked to our class for a while. She told us all about her research and she also showed us a video of all the things she did to gather her information.
We also learnt about our personal environments. Things like who influences us on what we eat for breakfast and the cost and where we got it from. We learnt about Matauranga science where we chose our own little pieces of information.
Yesterday in double period we learnt about the different food groups. We also made presentation about a specific food group and in partners/groups we presented our finding to the whole class. One subject from science I found links into my life the most, was our food environment. There were many different types of food groups, such as: fibre, protein, sugar, minerals, fats etc. I never realised the impact it had in my life.
I found that PE, health and science all cross over with each other. They all have their own parts in our breakfast and also our well being. I think it's also helped us with our integrated unit and being able to understand it more. The subjects we learn about our breakfast and well being are maths, science, health, Physical ed, food tech, social studies and English.
We are also going to be writing a raps in our class. It will be about all the things we have learnt so far. We saw the rap Mrs wells made with her other class and we are very excited.
The work I was most proud of was the presentation Bianca and I researched. We researched sugar, we found out about the different types of sugar and what it does to our bodies. We learned the difference between healthy and unhealthy sugars. Also how many servings we should have a day. Our presentation only took us 20 minutes to complete with making it look cool and also adding all of our information. We scored 25 out of 25 for all of the aspects We found that most of these activities didn't take very long to complete. And we walk away with loads of information.
Also in our other classes out teachers make us breakfast. In pe yesterday morning Mr moys made us sandwhiches and got apples and explained to us how much everything would cost and how much food could be made. We tested to see if it gave us more energy while we played.

If i were Prime minister for a day I would..
I would take a step back and look for problems with NZ. whether it be housing, fixing the roads or raising the pay to teachers or nurses. I personally would like to fix the roads in New Zealand as they can get very dangerous. Fixing them would cause fewer car accidents.

Role of parliment
There are three main jobs of the parliament. making new laws, improving old law amendments and deciding on how tax money is spent. I think that the government should use tax money and put it towards houses/shelter for people who were kicked out of their homes or who have no home. I think it would be important because it could save peoples lives. It could also go towards giving people raises like teachers or nurses. Because the teacher has long hours and may also be looking after our next generations I also think that it would be ideal for them to fix our roads. So it's safer for when we all travel

South african migrants
Today i presented my migrant inquiry on South African immigrants moving to New Zealand. I found presenting to the class was easy. I could have improve my presenting by talking more clearly and knowing what i'm going to say. My teacher said my strength in presenting was that I understood what i was presenting and that I processed. Also that one of my weaknesses in my presenting was that my actual presentation could have been more spread out. Overall I think i did a good job.

New things about tokelau
Today in sos I learnt more about tokelau, for example I learnt how most tokelauans became christians by the 1850s and how from atafu to nukunonu is 92km and then from nukunonu to fakaofo is 64km across the rough ocean. I also found out that tokelau gets and average of 2,500mm of rain per year.
Something interesting I found out was that slave ships from peru took more than half of the people on tokelau into slavery.

Climate change
Global warming relates/connects to climate refugees because of the temperature increasing rapidly. The climate refugees are victims of climate change. Climate change is caused by us, humans. Due to all of our factories producing unnatural gases and it’s causing the global temperature to rise. It’s also causing the sea levels to rise causing flooding in certain countries. Fossils and forests have been cut and burned. Which is also intoxication the air.

Performing arts
I am presenting a group dance performance. The song we are dancing to is 'Single ladies' by Beyonce. We aren't using instruments for it as it is just a dance. We use our class time by watching choreography videos to that specific song. So far we have learned the words of our song and some actions.

Trip to tokelau
LI: Imagine you are a student travelling back to your homeland Tokelau on the boat trip after you have completed your studies. Write a diary entry describing your trip back home and how you are feeling about your future.
I've just finished my studies and am on my way to tokelau. On the boat it's good, I've been really excited for the arrival to see my family. I hope to see everyone is well and safe. I last talked to them a few days before the departure and we've been out on the sea for a day now. I get a little bit sea-sick every now and then, it's a little hard when all you see is ocean. Other than that I look forward to seeing my family and being back home.
Last night's sleep was ok, it got a bit cold with the small amount of blankets and the water splashing us. Some of the people snored but it was nothing compared to the waves crashing onto the side of the boat. But it was amazing to look up at the sky and see the stars and the moon. It was so peaceful the next morning, I was a bit tired as I stayed up most of the night but the sunrise was beautiful. Anyways it's time to go now. I'll write when we get to tokelau.

Yr 9 Stars camp 2018 !
My highlights of camp were pretty much everything. I had fun with all of the activities maybe except for one which was the raft building because it wasn't as easy to do. One of my favourite highlights was the confidence course because it was fun rolling around in the mud and getting through the obstacles.
My lowlights were getting sick at camp and the raft building activity. I wasn't a big fan of the raft building because one of our star mentors didn't help us through it properly. Our group also didn't really work together on it.
I think to improve the camp for the next yr 9's would be to make it a little bit longer because it's a very fun camp and I wanted to stay longer as did other yr 9 students.

Reflection on sos
The tradition I chose was the 'Poi' I chose to research this because I've never known much about them and why they originally used. I found out that it was used by the men for strength and coordination needed for their wars. And by the women for flexibility in their wrists. This has managed to sustain in our society today used in kapa haka performances. When I presented I felt like i did a good job. I think it would've been better if I had props to show the class instead of using my hands.

Hot cakes
Today we made Hot cakes.
Instructions on how to make them:
1. Put pan on stove to heat up
2. 1 1/2 c of S.R.F ( Self Rising FLour )
3. 1/2 c of sugar
4. 1 c of milk
5. 1 Egg
6. Mix all ingredients in a bowl
7. add oil into your pan and cook 2 hot cakes at a time.
You should finish with 6 hot cakes.

Finding a fraction of a number:
To find a fraction of a number we divide the number by the number by the bottom of a fraction and multiply it by the number at the top.
eg. 3/8 of 32
1/8 or 32 is 4 so 3/8 of 32 = 4 x 3 = 12
Percentages:
Percentages as a fraction are always out of 100.
eg. 35% means 35/100
when we convert percentages to decimals we divide by 100
when we convert decimals to percentages we multiply by 100
eg. 35% = 0.35
0.15 = 15%

Made in Taiwan II Oscar and Nathans Journey.
The main purpose of Oscar and Nathans journey was to find out where they migrated from and how they got to where they are now. They first went to Mahia, to find out more about Nathan and his pre-history. They next went to the Cook Islands as Nathans report said his ancestors may have migrated from there. Moving onto Oscar’s discovery they first went to Samoa where he had lived until he was 3 and later went back to visit after 18 years. After that trip they moved to the next country: Vanuatu, where they found some strong evidence that Polynesians were once there. The last trip was to Taiwan where they noticed how similar they’re language, names and traditional ways were to the Maori Culture.
Some of the discoveries I found interesting in the countries they visited were: The languages and how they were very similar, common foods of one country, pottery they made and they had very similar traditions especially between the Taiwanese and Maori for example, in Taiwan when you are greeting someone you press noses, also used in Maori culture it's called a hongi.
Some evidence supporting the theory suggesting Polynesians migrated from Asia is how some common foods in Polynesia are actually from Asia for example, bananas, taro and yams. Another piece or evidence is that the languages are similar. Simple words like the numbers from 1-10, days or the week and other basic words.
I think that the trip was successful because they found out how similar all of the cultures are in so many different ways. Like traditions, foods, myths and legend and also their pottery/art had the same patterns used in other cultures.

Pasta Salad
1. 2 cups of water into a pot and boil.
Add pasta and cook until soft.
Strain under cold water in a colander.
2. Dice half an onion and fry until cooked,
Add diced ham to the onion. Let cool.
3. Combine everything in a bowl and mix
it wit mayo, add salt and then serve.

Sponge rolls
Last week we made sponge rolls.
We made a simple sponge cake. We then rolled it in a tea towel. After sitting there we unrolled it to cool. After it was cool we got ready whipped cream and prayed it inside then rolled it. Lastly we topped it with more whipped cream and some chocolate syrup.

One Cup of flour
One cup of sugar
4 eggs

Multi Coloured muffins
Cooking:
Steps: Dry ingredients,
1 - 1 ½ c of S.R.F
2 - ⅓ c or sugar
Steps: Wet ingredients,
1 - 1 c of milk
- ¼ c oil
- 1 lid of vanilla essence
- 3 drops of food colouring
2 - whisk both wet & dry ingredients
- scoop 1 dessert spoon each muffin and top up with the rest of the mixture
- 180 degrees for 15 min

SOS
There are many theories on where the polynesians migrated from. I will be comparing the theories that polynesians came from both ‘Asia’ and ‘South America’. “
South America Theory
Thor Heyerdahl” is a theorist that studied the case stating that polynesians came from ‘South America’. During his studies he discovered huge statues of the ancient civilisations of South America, also found on ‘Easter Island’ (Island located in eastern polynesia). He also sailed on a raft named the ‘Kon Tiki’ for days to test his theory (That polynesians migrated from south america). He later washed up on “Rairoa” an Island in eastern polynesia.
Asia Theory
Some people believe that polynesians might have also migrated from ‘Asia’. Both languages are very similar and some people decided to look at some mitochondrial dna giving information about maternal ancestry. Also some common foods from Asia, eaten in polynesia are bananas, taro and yams.
My Opinion
I think that both theories were very strong. I can’t choose which one I support more because the evidence on both sides is very good. I believe polynesians could have migrated from both countries and somehow met each other during their journeys.

Reflection of Maths so far..
L: What did I learn?
So far in maths I've explored more around the 'Order of Operations' and 'Bedmas' I also managed to be able to understand how to do Bedmas in more complicated equations.
A: What did people do to help me learn?
I think that getting some help from my friends next to me helped because I'd get stuck on my bedmas and how I supposed to order the equation. It also helped with them practising our basic facts so we could have an easier understanding of our work.
N: What do I want to learn next?
I'd like to learn more about algebra. I think I'm fairly okay with my algebra but I'd like to eplore that subject a bit more.
D: What would I like to do differently?
I would like to change the work given to us through education perfect so it can be easier to finish on time. I think they are too complicated for a timed question.
