Swimming with the sharks pt.1

Task:
By the end of Day #3, you have seen a lot of the north island of New Zealand.  Hopefully you have enjoyed it and you’re excited for the next phase of your journey – the ferry trip across the Cook Strait from the bottom of the north island to the top of the south island. You will spend the next two days exploring the south island before you head back up to Auckland, via Wellington (the capital city of New Zealand).

Farewell Spit has been in the news recently as a number of whales accidentally swam into the spit and became stuck on the beach. They were unable to swim back to the ocean because the water was too shallow. Many local people tried to save the ‘beached’ whales. Please follow this Farewell Spit link to learn more about what happened.

To help the stranded whales the locals kept them wet so they could stay alive till the doC came. Freedom campers offered their towels, t-shirts and sarongs to wet and put over them. They also gathered their cooking pots, chilly bins, water bottles and mixing bowls to carry the water to the whales.

  1. Kia ora Cameo,

It is great to see a 'live action' picture of what happened in Farewell Spit earlier in the year. It really was a tragedy that the pilot whales swam so far up the spit that they got caught on the sand when the tide went out. It was clear that the locals did everything that they could to save the whales but, sadly, almost 300 passed away. I really hope that the remaining pilot whales stay far out at sea.

Have you ever seen a whale swimming in the sea? I had the chance to watch a pod of whales swim past me when I was staying in Tonga. It was magical! The whales were having a great time, swimming and splashing in the water. I really hope to have the chance to go back to Tonga one day to see more whales swim by!

    Bye for now :)
